Hungarian costume designer’s dress sells for €60,000
The iconic flower dress from Ari Aster’s movie, Midsommar, was auctioned off for about 20.6 million forints ($65,000). The movie was shot in Hungary, and many of the costumes were designed by the Hungarian Andrea Flesch. This particularly interesting piece was worn by Florence Pugh.
The ‘May Queen’ dress worn by actress Florence Pugh, was made using 10,000 silk flowers. The dress weighs about 15 kg (33 lbs), because of which they had to use special designs and engineer the dress to a certain extent. The dress itself and the spiked crown was made using silk forget-me-nots, sweet peas, buttercups, cornflowers, and Persian jewels.
Forbes reported that the maker of the movie, A24, auctioned off several items that were used in Midsommar. Along with the iconic costumes designed by Andrea Flesch, other props were up for grabs as well, for example, the bear headdress made by Hungarian special make-up and prop master Iván Pohárnok. According to Variety, the money raised by
A24 is donated to the FDNY Foundation, which is a non-profit supporting firefighters in New York, whose families have been impacted by the current coronavirus pandemic. A24 raised over $200,000 to help the cause.
The ‘May Queen’ floral dress even caught the eye of Ariana Grande, among others, but the highest bidder was the Academy Museum (yes, the organisation behind the Oscars).
According to A24’s website, the final bid was $65,000.
The flower crown was sold for $15,000, the previously mentioned bear headdress worn by Jack Reynor was sold for $5,750, and the finishing mallet was sold for $10,000. Overall, the props – several of which were made by Hungarian professionals – used in Midsommar contributed $100,000 dollars to a good cause.
